Metal makes a bookmark permanent, which is why it suits commemoratives, memorials and anything with a date on it. Photo etching cuts fine detail straight through the sheet, so a crest or a skyline reads as a silhouette rather than as a print.

Gauge is the whole engineering question. Too thick and the book will not close; too thin and it bends the first time it is pushed into a bag. We use a gauge that flexes and returns, and we round every edge, because an unrounded etched edge will cut paper and occasionally fingers.

Finishes run from polished brass to brushed stainless and black oxide. Colour fill in the etched recesses is available where a logo needs to be more than a silhouette.
