Magnetic vs. tasselled bookmarks
One clips to the page, one hangs a tassel out of the book — an honest side-by-side from the people who make both.
The short answer
Choose magnetic fold-over bookmarks when the bookmark has to stay with the reader — in a school bag, a commute or a book club — because it clips around the page and cannot fall out. Choose tasselled and ribbon bookmarks when the bookmark is a gift or a retail item, because the tassel makes it easy to find and instantly reads as a present. The deciding question is simple: is it for reading on the move, or for giving?
Side by side
| Feature | Magnetic fold-over | Tasselled & ribbon |
|---|---|---|
| How it keeps your place | Folds over a single page and grips it with two magnets captured between the layers | Sits between the pages, with the tassel or ribbon left outside the book |
| In a bag | Stays put — it is clipped to the page, so it cannot slide out | Flat card can slide out; the tassel makes it easy to find again |
| Effect on the book | Grip is tuned so it holds without marking a thin page | A flat ribbon lies inside a closed hardback; a tassel hangs outside it |
| Both faces and across the fold — designed as a strip | Both sides of the card | |
| Construction | Laminated board for durability | Heavier board with a metal-reinforced eyelet so the tassel does not tear out |
| Presentation | Carded or loose | Individually bagged for retail; tassel colour matched to a reference |
| Best for | Students, book clubs, schools and anyone who reads on the move | Gifts, bookshops, museums, publishers and weddings |
Keeping the place: why flat bookmarks fall out
The usual failure of a flat bookmark is simple: carried in a bag, upside down, it slides out and the reader loses their place. A magnetic fold-over wraps one page and grips it, so it stays exactly where it was left.
Grip is a specification, not a bonus. Too weak and the bookmark slides; too strong and it can emboss a thin page over months. We tune the magnets so they hold without marking, rather than fitting the strongest magnet available.
Gifting and retail: where the tassel earns its place
A tassel makes a bookmark findable on a shelf or in a bag, and it turns a printed card into something people keep. It is also the classic weak point: a knot pulling on a bare punched hole tears the card. Ours hang from a metal-reinforced eyelet on a heavier board, so the tassel stays on.
Tassels come in silk, cotton or metallic, colour-matched to your reference. If the bookmark will live inside a hardback that people actually close, a flat ribbon is the better choice because it does not wedge the pages.
Artwork: rectangle or strip?
A tasselled bookmark is designed like any card: a front and a back. A magnetic fold-over is read on the front face, the back face and across the fold, so the artwork has to work as one continuous strip. Our designers redraw your artwork for whichever format you choose as part of the free mockup.
The verdict
Pick magnetic for students, schools, book clubs and readers who carry books around — anywhere a bookmark that falls out is a bookmark that failed.
Pick tasselled or ribbon for gifts, bookshops, museums, publishers and weddings — anywhere the bookmark has to look like a present.
Both styles start at 12 bookmarks, come with a free artwork redraw and a free mockup within 24 hours, and ship in about 2 weeks. Still deciding? Our bookmark type selection guide covers card, leather and metal too, or browse every style we print.
